Why have a policy?

On this page you will find an overview to the PreDesigner app privacy policy and the policy itself.

This policy was first published because v5 of PreDesigner [Lens Calculator] for Android included various ‘social’ features.  These features required the use of new permissions.

This has been revised for v8.0 [Feb 2015] because we have reduced the number of permissions required from five to two.

We will explain why these permissions are required and then give the formal policy.  In brief though, we do not collect or retain or pass on personal or non personal information - all of the permission are essential to the new features and are not used for anything else!

NB in future version we may include ‘analytics’ routines to help give us a better understanding of how the app is used. That would require non-personal information - see below.  In any version we will not collect, retain or pass on your personal information.

1: Permissions required for PreDesigner v8.0.

PreDesigner v8 includes a twitter news feed area, and sharing features.  These require the following permissions - INTERNET & ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE.  we will explain.

1.1: Twitter permissions

The app has a footer which shows the latest tweets from Qioptiq.  This footer can be hidden until the next tweet arrives.  Tap the footer to see a list of the latest tweets with re-tweet options.

This requires INTERNET & ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE to be able to poll the twitter feed every now and then.

1.2: Google +1 button [now removed]

In version 5.0 we added the google +1 button so that people could ‘like’ the app easily.  This however required some intrusive looking permissions and offered no real benefit to users.

We therefore removed this feature completely.  There is now a permission free ‘Rate this app’ item in the menu, which you can select.  You will then be offered the option to goto the Playstore site to [hopefully] give us a good 5 stars and a nice comment!

1.3: Sharing

in Version 5.0, we introduced a screen capture sharing capability.  The screen is seved as a jpg file, and then attached to a user chosen message.
This originally was saved in general or ‘external’ storage, which required WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.  In version 8.0 we have re-written the routine to save the file in the app’s private storage area and thus eliminated the need for that permission also.
